July 19, 2026 (Sunday)

On Sunday, July 19, I opened my shop as usual while working on a kintsugi repair sample. Despite the heat, a couple visiting from France stopped by and said, “We saw two sake cups displayed at the café next door (my mother’s café) and were curious about them. Could we take a look?” So we walked together to the café, and I took the pieces out of the display case to show them.

The Snow Mountain Sake Cup I Love the Most

Among the pieces, they chose the sake cup I love the most from my Snow Mountain series. It has a tiny chip that I repaired with genuine gold powder, but the finish is so smooth that the repair is almost invisible.

This sake cup is something I kept on display while telling myself, “Even if it doesn’t sell, it has meaning just being here.” For a long time, I even displayed it as a non‑for‑sale piece. I’ve posted photos of it on my blog several times because it’s one of my personal favorites.

Even though I use the same clay and the same glaze, I can never quite recreate this exact color, shape, or the way the glaze flows. Every time I make a Snow Mountain piece, I think, “This time for sure!” But the kiln conditions and the moisture of the glaze are slightly different now compared to when I made this cup. It’s the same electric kiln, but after years of use and several repairs, the way it heats has subtly changed. Perhaps that’s why this particular piece has a unique atmosphere I can’t reproduce.

Bijou Kintsugi

Bijou Kintsugi and the Classic Snow Mountain

Another piece displayed beside it was a sake cup from the same Snow Mountain series, featuring a low foot ring built by setting small white moonstones one by one. I filled the gaps with genuine gold powder, creating what I call Bijou Kintsugi, my own modern kintsugi style.

The classic Snow Mountain piece with its beautiful ceramic sheen and glaze scenery, and the modern piece combining different materials—both are dear to me, and both feel true to my style.

The couple liked both pieces, but ultimately chose the Snow Mountain sake cup. That made me genuinely happy, because I’ve continued pottery simply out of love for it.

Turning Pottery Into My Work

I started pottery as a hobby, fell deeper and deeper into it, and before I knew it, it became my work. There were times when I almost came to dislike pottery, but it has been nearly three years since I returned to Kyoto.

Having my family home in a tourist area and my mother running a café is truly a blessing—both as a potter and as a modern kintsugi artist. Being able to speak directly with customers, explain my work myself, and have them choose a piece to take home is such a joy.

And on this day, for the first time, someone purchased one of my pottery pieces. At that moment, a small thorn-like feeling that had been stuck somewhere in my heart quietly slipped away. I finally felt that maybe—just maybe—I could call myself a potter.

Of course, I’m always happy when people choose my kintsugi works too. But having someone choose a pottery piece I made with my own hands felt like a dream quietly coming true.

20 Years of Pottery, 10 Years of Kintsugi

I began pottery in 2007, so this year marks my 20th year. I officially started my business in 2018, so I’ve been working as a potter for nine years. Next year will be my 10th anniversary.

I started kintsugi in 2017, and this year marks my 10th year in that craft as well. I want to continue both steadily and sincerely, doing what I can each day.

A Record of a Dream Come True

A small dream came true, and I wanted to leave a record of that feeling. So I wrote this blog post for the first time in a while.
