As a modern kintsugi instructor

 

2019年頃から、陶芸のレッスンの傍ら金継ぎを習いたいという方のお声を受けてパーソナルなレッスンをしていました。

始まりは、私の器をご購入くださったお客様からのそんな何気ない依頼でした。

Around 2019, I started giving personalized lessons to people who wanted to learn kintsugi alongside my pottery lessons.

It started as such a casual request from a customer who purchased one of my vessels.

 

当時、最低限度の知識は得て、自分の器は直せるものの、教えるには至らず、長い間、私自身が習いに行った先生をご案内していたのですが「是非、優佳子さんから学びたい」とおっしゃってくださり、当時は本当に限定的でしたが本漆を扱った金継ぎレッスンをしていました。

At that time, I had acquired a minimum level of knowledge and could fix my own vessels, but I was not able to teach. For a long time, I was suggesting a teacher whom I myself went to learn from, and he said, “I would love to learn from you, Yukako,” and I gave kintsugi lessons with real-urushi lacquer, although they were really limited at the time.

 

ただ、私自身も漆かぶれを何度か経験しており、それらがきっかけだったか、お客様が忙しくなられたか、私が器の制作に追われ始めたか、いくつかの理由が重なりそのレッスンは自然となくなりました。

However, I myself had experienced lacquer rashes several times, and for a combination of several reasons, either because I had experienced them myself, my customers had become busy, or I had begun to be overwhelmed with the production of vessels, the lessons naturally ceased.

 

私が漆を扱った金継ぎを習い始めたのは以前のBlogでも書きましたが2017年の11月～12月頃です。

I started learning Kintsugi with lacquer around November-December 2017, as I wrote in my previous Blog.

 

ちょうど会社員生活を終えることが決まり、時間に余裕ができ始めたのです。

それまでは、限られた冬のお休みは雪山へ通い、スキーをするというのがメインの過ごし方でした。

I had just decided to end my corporate life and began to have more time on my hands.

Until then, my main way of spending my limited winter vacation was to go to the snowy mountains and ski.

 

スキーに行かない週末は作陶を楽しむ。そんな風に会社員生活を送っていて、金継ぎを習いに行く時間まで確保できていなかったのです。

On weekends when I am not skiing, I enjoy making pottery. I was living my life as a company employee in such a way that I did not have enough time to go and learn kintsugi.

 

ですが、会社を辞めることにしたので、陶芸もスキーをする時間もどちらもしっかりとれるので、雪が降る前に金継ぎを習得したいと考え、家から近くだった鎌倉のレッスンに通うことにしました。

However, I decided to quit my job so I could have more time for both pottery and skiing, and I wanted to learn kintsugi before the snow fell, so I decided to attend lessons in Kamakura, which was close to my house.

 

色々な種類の陶器を作っていたので、自身の作品で、＜割れ＞＜かけ＞＜焼き損じのヒビ＞の物を持って行きました。

Since he made various types of ceramics, he brought with him his own works that were <cracked>, <hanging>, and <cracks due to misfiring>.

　

 

全てを独学で始めるよりも、最初のスタートはプロから学び、ポイントを教えてもらった方が習得もスムーズだと思ってネットなどでも検索して予習をしてからレッスンに参加しました。

Rather than starting everything on my own, I thought it would be easier to learn from a professional and have them teach me the key points, so I searched the Internet and did some preliminary study before attending the lessons.

特に、かぶれなどの懸念がある漆の取り扱いもあったので、まずは正しい扱いを習いたいと思ったのです。

In particular, I wanted to learn how to handle lacquer properly first, as there were concerns about rashes and other issues.

 

 

当初の目的は、

The original purpose,

• 自分の作った器を全て直すこと。
• 今後、破損が出ても悲しまないで済むように技術を身につけること。

でした。

To fix all the vessels I have made.
To acquire skills so that I will not be sad if damage occurs in the future.

I was.

 

そういったわけで色々なタイプの破損を直していきました。

That is how I fixed various types of damage.

 

本漆を扱った金継ぎは1日では完成しません。

割れはまず漆で接着することから始まりますがなかなか大変です。（具体的な方法に関してはここで省きます）

Kintsugi with real-urushi lacquer cannot be completed in one day.

The first step is to glue the cracks with lacquer, which is quite difficult. (I will not go into the specifics of how to do this here.)

 

かぶれないようにゴム手袋をし、長袖の洋服を着て作業していました。

習い始めた当時はかぶれることもなく、漆に対しての抗体のようなものがあったのかもしれません。

To avoid getting a rash, I wore rubber gloves and long-sleeved clothes to work with it.

At the time I started learning, I did not get a rash, and perhaps I had some kind of antibodies against lacquer.

 

特に漆への懸念もなかったので、当時は本漆での金継ぎにしか興味がなかったくらいです。

I had no particular concerns about lacquer, so much so that I was only interested in kintsugi with real lacquer at the time.

 

私が自身の器を直していることを知った周りの人たちから【簡易金継ぎ】と呼ばれる方法でレッスンをしてほしいと頼まれ、キットを買いそろえ直して（本金継のセットは既にそろえていました）練習し始めましたがエポキシの扱いにとても苦戦して、結局は本漆での修繕を長い間行っていました。

When people around me learned that I was repairing my own vessels, they asked me to give lessons in what they called “simple kintsugi,” and I bought a kit and started practicing again (I already had a set for real-kintsugi), but I had a very hard time handling epoxy and ended up doing repairs with hon-urushi for a long time.

 

本漆はかぶれると大変ですが、乾いてしまったものを削るのはエポキシよりも柔らかいので削りやすいですし耐水ペーパーでやすりをかけてもきれいに平らにしやすかったのです。

While it is difficult to scrape off real lacquer when it gets a rash, it is easier to scrape off dried-out pieces because it is softer than epoxy, and it was easy to flat up by sanding with water-resistant paper.

 

そんなわけで、私の場合は、時間がかかっても本漆の方がきれいに仕上げやすいのもありエポキシや接着剤を使った【簡易金継ぎ】に当時は苦手意識をもっていました。

Therefore, I was not very good at “simple kintsugi” using epoxy or glue, because it was easier to finish a piece beautifully using real lacquer even if it took more time.

 

が、放射線治療中で免疫力が落ちていた時にうっかり漆かぶれをしてしまい、体のあらゆる個所がかぶれ、かゆみで何日も眠れないほどになり、大変だったのでその後は金継ぎをしばらくやめていました。

However, when I was undergoing radiation treatment and my immune system was weakened, I inadvertently developed a lacquer rash that covered every part of my body, and the itching was so severe that I could not sleep for days.

 

とはいえ、自分の作った器の破損はどうしても起こります。

Nevertheless, damage to the vessel of my products.

 

それで、色々なエポキシを買いあさり、自分で試して扱いやすく、国内のどこででも手に入れやすく安定して供給されているものにたどり着きました。

So I bought a variety of epoxies, tried them out myself, and found one that was easy to handle, easy to find anywhere in Japan, and in stable supply.

いまでもそのエポキシは気に入っており、レッスンでも、自身の修繕でも使用しています。

I still like the epoxy and use it in my lessons and for my own repairs.

 

実際にそのエポキシを使用して修繕した器で飲食もしています。

I actually eat and drink from vessels repaired with that epoxy.

数年使っていますが、その器での飲食による害が自身の身体にあるとは思えていません。

I have been using it for several years and do not believe that there is any harm to my own body from eating or drinking from that vessel.

 

ただ、こちらは手に入れやすい価格で提供されていることもあり、数年ごとに受けなければいけない食品衛生法の検査は受けてはらっしゃらないため、メーカーさんも食用でOKですとは言えないのが現状で、あくまでも自己責任の上で使用してください。と言わざるを得ないのです。

However, since this product is offered at an affordable price and has not been inspected by the Food Sanitation Law, which must be taken every few years, the manufacturer cannot say that it is OK for food use, and must be used at your own risk. We have no choice but to say, “Please use at your own risk.

 

ただ、メーカーさんに電話で商品に関して問い合わせた際、とても丁寧かつ親切に教えてくださり、メリットではなくデメリットをキチンと説明してくださいました。（メリットは既にリピートして購入している時点でわかっていると思われたのでしょう）

However, when I called the manufacturer to inquire about the product, they were very polite and helpful and neatly explained the disadvantages, not the advantages. (I guess they thought I knew the advantages when I was already a repeat purchaser.)

 

これはあくまでも個人的な考え方ではありますが、【デメリットを事前に開示する姿勢】があるのはそれが一個人であれ、会社であれ信頼に値すると思います。

This is just my personal view, but I believe that [an attitude of disclosing disadvantages in advance] is worthy of trust, whether it is an individual or a company.

 

ただ、現在あらゆるお仕事依頼も増えてきたため、【食品衛生基準】に達している（検査に出している）メーカーさんの接着剤も使用しています。

However, since we are now receiving an increasing number of requests for all kinds of work, we are also using adhesives from manufacturers that meet [food sanitation standards] (and have submitted their products for inspection).

（こちらは、クライアント様の要望で検査を通っているものを使ってほしいとのことで使用しています）

(This one is used at the request of the client to use one that has passed inspection.)

 

まだ使い始めたばかりですが最近のレッスンでは主にこちらを使っています。

I have just started using it, but I mainly use it in my recent lessons.

 

問い合わせた際、こちらのメーカーの方も色々と細かい説明をしてくださりとても親切でした。

When we inquired, the manufacturer here was very helpful in explaining various detail

 

自分自身で修繕した器の総数が今まで使っていたエポキシとは比にならないので、まだ、どちらが良いとは言い切れず、ケースバイケースでどちらも使用しています。

Since the total number of vessels I have repaired myself does not compare to the epoxy I have been using, I cannot yet say which is better, and I use both on a case-by-case basis.

 

本漆ではなく、科学者なのか技術者なのかの皆さんが開発した現代の扱いやすい接着剤を使うようになり、漆によるかぶれを心配しなくてよくなったことで、私の器の修繕の可能性は格段に上がりました。

The possibility of repairing my vessels has increased dramatically because I no longer have to worry about rashes caused by lacquer, as I no longer use real lacquer, but a modern, easy-to-handle adhesive developed by scientists or engineers.

 

各メーカーさんが食器修繕に適した接着剤を開発してくださり、それらを使わせて頂けるのは本当に感謝しかありません。

I am truly grateful that each manufacturer has developed adhesives suitable for tableware repair and allows us to use them.

 

たくさんのレッスンご参加の皆様の器の修繕に関わらせていただくことで、あらゆるケースの修繕に対しての知識と経験が増えて来たのもとてもありがたいです。

I am very grateful that we have been involved in the repair of many of our participants’ vessels, which has increased our knowledge and experience in repairing all types of cases.

 

自分の器の修繕だけでは得られなかったスキルが日々身についていくのはレッスンをする楽しさでもあります。

It is a pleasure to give lessons, as I gain skills every day that I could not have gained just by repairing my own vessels.

 

新しく使用している接着剤に関しては、今まで使用していたエポキシ樹脂とは接着しやすい物、時間、対処法も少し違うようです。

As for the new adhesive we are using, it seems to be a little different from the epoxy resin I have been using in terms of what is easy to bond, how long it takes, and how to deal with it.

こちらに関しては実績データ数がかなり違うのでまだ手探りな部分もありますがデータを蓄積していきたいと思います。

The number of actual data on this issue is quite different, so we are still groping in some areas, but we would like to accumulate data on this issue.

 

私自身が修繕した際にはエポキシ樹脂での修繕と変わらず直せたのですが、レッスンでは皆さまへのお伝え方法がまたエポキシ樹脂とは微妙に異なるためうまく伝えきれていない部分もありそうです。

When I repaired it myself, I was able to repair it as well as I could with epoxy resin, but I may not be able to convey the lesson as well as I could with epoxy resin because the way I convey the lesson to you is slightly different from epoxy resin.

 

レッスンにご参加くださる皆さまから学ぶことがたくさんあります。

I have much to learn from everyone who attends our lessons.

 

世の中にはまだまだ私の知らないことがあり、そういったことを教えていただけるのは凄くありがたいです。

There are still things in the world that I don’t know, and I am very grateful to be able to learn about them.

 

学んだことも、自分なりに消化してアウトプットに役立てていきたいです。

I would like to digest what I have learned in my own way and use it for output.

お子様向けレッスンはしばらく開催できていませんが、器を修繕するだけではなく、根源的な目的を明確にしたレッスンがしたいと思っています。（器を直して使う意味などを考えるキッカケになれば、と思います）

I have not been able to offer lessons for children for a while, but we would like to offer lessons that clarify the fundamental purpose of the lesson, rather than just repairing vessels. (I hope it will be a chance to think about the meaning of repairing and using vessels.)

 

あらゆることを吸収する柔軟性を持っている時期に体験することは大人になった時、ふとしたタイミングで活きてくると思います。

I believe that what you experience when you have the flexibility to absorb all kinds of things will come in handy at a moment’s notice when you become an adult.

 

Leadershipを育て、Experienceを積み、Opportunityを得る。

 

子供にも大人にも大切なことです。

This is important for both children and adults.

 

【器を修繕して使う】という行為はとても精神性の高い行いだと思っています。

物を大切に扱う事は私たち日本人が当たり前の様に子供のころから慣れ親しんできた習慣です。

I believe that the act of “repairing and using vessels” is a highly spiritual act.

It is a custom that we Japanese have been accustomed to since childhood, as if it were a matter of course.

 

私の場合は器を制作し販売もしてきました。

作るだけでなく、それを売るだけではなく、出たロス品や破損品をゴミとして廃棄してしまうのではなく、最後までその物の生命を全うさせることも私の宿命だと思っています。

 

1970年代高度成長期と共に高まった【モノ消費】からものの先にある体験を得たいという【コト消費】に変換していった1980年代バブル期、そして特別感を得られる【トキ消費】社会的、文化的な意味を重視する【意味消費】精神的な満足度を得られる【感情消費】商品やサービスそのものだけでなく応援の意味合いが強い【人消費】の時代へと世の中は変化してきました。

 

そう考えると、【モダン金継ぎレッスン】は全ての消費行動欲求を満たす内容でもあります。
